Territorios es una investigación fotográfica nacida de la observación que analiza subjetivamente los movimientos migratorios que fuerzan a diferentes comunidades a convivir en un mismo territorio.

A lo largo del siglo XX, dos guerras mundiales, el triunfo del comunismo en Rusia o el regimen Nazi en Alemania, la revolución industrial, el desmantelamiento de los imperios coloniales y otros acontecimientos históricos intensificaron el flujo de los movimientos migratorios.

Este proyecto, que comenzó en Nueva York, hace parada ahora en Londres. A día de hoy, en la que fuera durante años capital de un extenso Imperio Británico, conviven más de cincuenta razas foráneas, se hablan más de 300 lenguas diferentes y existen más de 150 religiones distintas.

Una vez más, a través de la fotografía, Susana reflexiona sobre la convivencia, la tolerancia, el respeto y la diversidad cultural de las diversas comunidades que conviven en una misma ciudad. Comunidades dispares, con tradiciones fuertemente arraigadas que sobreviven a través del tiempo y del espacio. ¿Es posible está convivencia?

Territorios is a photographic investigation as well as a personal reflection, born through my observation of different communities coexisting in the same territory. In this project, I present my thoughts about coexistence, tolerance, respect, diversity and our necessity to adapt to a new culture while, at the same time, we try to preserve our origins.

After two World Wars, the success of Communism in Russia or Nazism in Germany, Industrial Revolution, the dismantling of the Colonial Empires and other historical events, the migratory movements were increased.

In 2013, this project started in New York and today it is moving to London. In the once capital of the wide British Empire, more than fifty races coexist, over 300 languages are spoken and there are more than 150 different religions.

Once again, Susana uses photography to present her thoughts about coexistence, tolerance, respect, diversity, and our necessity to adapt to a new culture while, at the same time, we try to preserve our origins. Different communities with popular traditions that survive through time and space.

The result of this second part of the project is a group of images or photocollages where she shows us different places from the City of London. Each image in the series induces us to think about how this coexistance is possible.

Territorios is a personal reflection, born through her observation of all these communities matched together as pieces of a jigsaw. This is why the translation from Spanish to English is not literal. When she was thinking in Spanish she was drawn to the word 'Territorios', but when she translated it to English she used Jigsaw, because she liked the sound of this word, and also because it expresses how she imagines communities fit in together.

PURIM

En el calendario hebreo, durante el mes del Adar, se celebra el Purim, una festividad que conmemora el milagro que relata el Libro de Esther de la supervivencia del pueblo judío ante el ataque del rey persa Asuero.

El término Purim significa suerte. La fiesta de Purim está precedida por un ayuno menor, que comienza al amanecer y termina al ponerse el sol. El Ayuno de Ester conmemora los tres días de ayuno que guardaron Esther y los judíos persas antes de que ella se presentase ante el Rey a pedirle clemencia para su pueblo, en preparación para su reunión con el rey.

Durante la noche del Purim y la mañana de la festividad se lee en voz alta el Libro de Esther en la sinagoga. Durante esta lectura, a la que pueden asistir las mujeres y los niños, cada vez que se pronuncia el nombre de Haman se hace ruido, con carracas, zapateando, etc, para “encubrilo”.

Durante el Purim los judíos envían numerosos regalos a sus familiares y amigos, así como a los más necesitados. El Purim no es una festividad estrictamente religiosa y los negocios abren con normalidad, una de las cosas más destacadas de la festividad y que me llamó la atención cuando la descubrí es la costumbre de disfrazarse durante estos días.

Desde aquí me gustaría compartir una obra que hice con motivo de la celebración del Purim.

According the Hebrew calendar, Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrated during the month of Adar that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire where a plot had been formed to destroy them. The story is recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther.

Purim means lucky. The Purim holiday is preceded by a minor fast, the Fast of Esther, which commemorates Esther's three days of fasting in preparation for her meeting with the king.

During Purim night and day, the primary commandment is to hear the reading of the Book of Esther. It is customary to boo, hiss, stamp feet and rattle gragers (noisemakers) whenever the name of Haman is mentioned in the service. The purpose of this custom is to "blot out the name of Haman."

During the festivity of Purim, Jewish send numerous presents to their relatives and friends and also people in need. Purim is not a proper religious festivity and business open as usual. One of the noted things from Purim it is put a costume, to perform plays and parodies, and to hold beauty contests. 

I would like to share today some work I made during Purim celebrations.

On 19th February 2015, the same day the new moon is in Pisces, according to the Chinese Almanac, year 4713 or year of the sheep will commence. This intuitive and sensitive animal predicts a favourable period to transform ire, upset or dissatisfaction into a more optimistic way of seeing life that will lead us to success.

To celebrate this new year I would like to invite you to discover my work Almanaque, during the collective show curated by Vanya Balogh and Cedric Christie that, for the third consecutive year, will take place at the multi-storey car park on Newport Place in the heart of Soho, Chinatown.

Almanaque is a collection of twelve photographs that I took while in New York in 2013, during the celebrations of Chinese New Year 4711 or year of the snake. Almanaque mixes Occidental and Oriental cultures and reminds us the moon calendar festivities and suggests, according to the calendar, the best dates to make certain activities and be successful.

Every year, on the first lunar month of the lunisolar calendar, traditionally used in China, the Festival of Spring or New Year is celebrated. On the occasion of this celebration, a new edition of the Chinese Almanac appears, an annual guide that regulates the daily activities.

Almanaque was born through the annual tradition of this diary, commonly known by its Cantonese name, Tong Sing.

The Chinese Almanac has its roots in the Imperial calendar, a balance of solar and lunar patterns traditionally maintaining harmony among heaven, earth and mankind. For more than 2000 years, each succeeding court produced an annual document regulating daily activities.

The modern Tong Sing still divides the lunar year in 12 months and 24 sub-seasons. The almanac most lasting legacy has been regulating earthly life, although many of the activities mentioned in the almanac stems from an agrarian society much removed from contemporary life in urban China.

       El próximo 19 de febrero de 2015, cuando la luna nueva entre en el signo de piscis, dará comienzo, según el calendario chino, el año 4713, año de la oveja. En este año que comienza, este intuitivo y sensible animal nos augura un periodo propicio para transformar la ira, el disgusto y la insatisfacción en una forma más pacifica y optimista de ver la vida que nos conducirá al triunfo.

Para celebrar este nuevo año chino os invito a descubrir mi obra Almanaque en una exposición comisariada por Vanya Balogh y Cedric Christie que, por tercer año consecutivo, tendrá lugar en el Q Park de Newport Place en Chinatown, Londres.

Almanaque, es una colección de doce imágenes que realicé durante mi estancia en Nueva York en 2013, coincidiendo con las fiestas de celebración del año nuevo chino 4711 o de la serpiente. Almanaque fusiona la cultura occidental con la oriental y nos aconseja, siguiendo los dictados del calendario, las fechas más propicias para realizar con éxito una actividad determinada.

Cada año en el primer mes lunar del calendario lunisolar, utilizado tradicionalmente en China, se festeja el festival de la primavera o año nuevo chino. Con motivo de esta celebración del año nuevo lunar, aparece una nueva edición del almanaque chino, un documento anual que regula las actividades diarias.

Almanaque nace de la tradición anual de la publicación este manual, conocido comúnmente con su nombre cantonés: Tong Sing.

    El almanaque chino tiene su origen en el calendario imperial, un equilibrio entre los patrones solares y lunares que tradicionalmente mantienen la armonía entre la tierra, el cielo y la humanidad. Durante más de 2000 años, cada familia reinante produjo este documento anual que regula las actividades diarias.

Aunque actualmente el Tong Sing aún divide al año lunar en doce meses y 24 sub-estaciones y diariamente nos aconseja sobre las actividades apropiadas o inapropiadas para la jornada, aunque estas actividades no se han adaptado a la vida moderna en la ciudad.
